Description

One day awareness program on gender issues was organised by the Sikkim State Commission for Women in collaboration with the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice GOI on 23rd June 2022 at Government Sr. Secondary Girls School, Kyongsa, Gezing, West Sikkim. The program was graced by Smt. Chung Chung Bhutia, Chairperson, Khadi and Industries Board as the chief guest. The objective of the program was to highlight the importance of various women and child related laws and its implementation in the State for their welfare and protection. The program was attended by the students and teachers of the said school. Resource Person Sangita Gurung from One Stop Centre highlighted the provisions of Domestic Violence Act and also urged the participants to be aware and avail of the various facilities provided under One Stop Centre which is set up for women and children in distress. Smt. Puja Lamichaney, Panel Advocate spoke on the various provisions of Protection of Women from sexual harassment at workplace and also the facilities of legal aid services provided under State Legal Service Authority. The third Resource Person Ms. Bhawana Limboo District Child Protection Officer spoke on the Pocso act and it’s provisions. Further she also highlighted about the various services provided under Integrated Child Protection Scheme. The Chairperson Smt. Chung Chung Bhutia, spoke on the new women and child related schemes like Bhaini and Aama being implemented by the State Government for the welfare of our girl child and non working mothers. Further she also emphasised about the dangers and negative use of social networking sites which is being used as a medium to lure girls and women out of the state. She urged the participants to be very vigilant about such issues. She further requested the teachers to conduct such programs at regular basis so that students are made aware of such problems and Students against abuse and trafficking club SAAT club could play a vital role in it. Smt. Yousa Lachenpa, Member Secretary highlighted the objectives of conducting such Awareness program and the purpose of reaching out to students and public at grassroot level on the various provisions of Pocso, Domestic Violence, Sexual harassment of women At workplace and trafficking. The program also had answers and question session at the end wherein participants place their queries on various issues relating to Pocso and domestic violence etc. The vote of thanks was conveyed by Smt. Anjali Tiwari, Incharge of the School who also submitted that the program was very productive and has been very enlightening not only to the students but also to the teachers. The program was moderated by Ms. Pema Yanki Bhutia, Teacher of the school.The staffs of Women Commission namely Purna Brd. Rai, Tenzing Norbu and Nima Lepcha were also part of the program.
